Merritt has lived in Saint Paul most of her life, in Summit Hill, Como and now downtown. She changes housing to suit budget and lifestyle, starting in an apartment, and followed by a starter single-family, a condo, another single-family, and now back to a condo. Merritt lives with her husband Craig Smith and dog Juliet. Their two daughters return during college and work breaks.

Merritt is a career city planner currently working as an independent consultant. She worked for the City of Saint Paul for 11 years on a wide variety of projects and loves the ins and outs of urban policy, planning and design. In 2018, Merritt was Project Manager for the Governor’s Task Force on Housing, where she became familiar with many aspects of housing policy and affordability strategies.

Volunteering is also in her wheelhouse. She currently serves on the boards for Sustain Saint Paul, Fresh Energy and Oakland Cemetery. She previously served on the board and chaired the Summit Hill District Council and the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, as well as helping to found the Twin Cities Metro Independent Business Alliance (MetroIBA).
